The large flywheel is essential for provide the needed kinetic energy storage for a smooth, low-impact exercise experience.
Also, due to its horizontal design and large flywheel, the coupler bar need to long enough to provide a moderate pedal tile.

Short Coupler - Steep Pedal Tilt
A short coupler leads to a shorter machine frame, but increases pedal tilt. This is one of the design models adopted in home-use ellipticals.
Short Crank - Reduced Stride-n-Lift
Short-crank design is another approach to reducing pedal tilt range while keeping the machine frame short.
This design leads to reduced motion range — smaller stride and lift. Usually, the flywheel is also downsized, giving this four-bar linkage elliptical a compact footprint.
Small Flywheel
On many compact or low-cost elliptical machines, the flywheel is small and stores limited kinetic energy. When the pedal enters the low-torque zone, the machine may not have enough stored energy to carry the motion smoothly from one step to the next. As a result, users often rely more on the moving handlebars to pull or push through the weak portion of the pedal stroke.
